Behind the Design: Izzie and Natalie

Inspired by the changing seasons, our latest floral designs offer stunning detail and that personal touch. Take a look behind the design of Izzie and Natalie.

With spring just around the corner, our designers have been busy dreaming up designs inspired by the energy and colour of the season.

Blossoming flowers, warm sunlight, and windswept meadows make their way into the bedroom with our latest arrivals, Izzie and Natalie. We spoke to our talented in-house designers about how they created these unique spring florals.

Behind the Design of Izzie

Izzie was inspired by natural dyeing techniques. I wanted to explore a new take on spring florals, combining trending colours with traditional methods to create a soft, dreamy design with a hand-made feel.

Creating Izzie was a process of experiment and play. I collected a variety of flowers from our local area (Hawthorn) and pressed them into scraps of linen and silk. The natural pigments in the petals left delicate imprints that were scanned and recolored in warm shades of peach and butter yellow.

I tried a few techniques to create the final design - hammering the flowers straight into the fabric, pressing them slowly beneath heavy objects, wrapping them up and steaming over low heat. Each created a different effect, and layering these imprints helped bring a soft, dreamlike quality to the design. Izzie really feels like a slice of the natural world.

Behind the Design of Natalie

Natalie was inspired by layers of flowers and the beautiful colour combinations you’d find in a meadow. I wanted to create a design that felt lively yet dreamy, like sleeping amongst wildflowers.

The design was created with a mix of techniques and a lot of trial and error! I first built up the background – loosely painting different watercolour combinations, tearing them up, scanning them in, and then building up the layers of paper in photoshop. The florals were then painted with a mix of watercolour, gouache, and pencil.

The mixed media nature of Natalie makes it feel contemporary and energetic, with layers that replicate the depth of a real meadow. I originally wasn’t going to include the white rip marks from the teared-up paper, but I loved the strong contrast and flow it gave in separating the washy colours. The papery texture mixed with loosely painted florals creates a natural yet playful look, bringing any bedroom to life.
